S A SUGAR TECHNOLOGISTS' ASSOCIATION

AN UPDATE ON THE 74th ANNUAL SASTA CONGRESS

EXTENSION OF CONGRESS DATES

Congress will now run from 1 August to 4 August 2000.  According to the current preliminary programme the congress will finish around midday on 4 August.

GUEST SPEAKERS

W e are privileged to have as our guest speakers ms bongiwe njobe and dr colin ryan.

Ms Njobe is the  director general  of the national department of agriculture.  She holds a Masters’ Degree in Agriculture from Bulgaria where she completed her thesis in the field of Plant Breeding. The past 14 years of her work have been in agriculture and included farm management in Zambia and Tanzania and academic work at the School of Agriculture and Rural Development, University of Pretoria.  Ms Njobe has also worked on gender issues, land and agricultural policy matters, as well as being closely involved as a programme co-ordinator for the University Development Programme intent on creating a greater scientific focus at historically ‘black’ universities.  She has served on the boards of various non-government business organisations, NGO’s and other parastatal organisations.

Dr Ryan is Director of the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations of Australia.  He is involved in various capacities with a range of organisations including the Board Of Management of the Co-operative Research Centre for Tropical Plant Protection.  He is a member of the Executive Board  of the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists and is Adjunct Professor, Dept of Botany of the University of Queensland and is well known to most people in the international Sugar industry.

AWARDS

sasta gold medal award

It is with great pleasure that we advise that Professor Peter Rein, formerly of Tongaat Hulett Sugar Ltd and now Professor and Head of the Audubon Sugar Institute, Baton Rouge, USA has been nominated, and has accepted, to receive a SASTA Gold Medal Award.  Professor Rein will attend the SASTA Congress as our guest and will be presented with the award at the opening of congress on 1 August at the Holiday Inn (Elangeni).

Professor Rein is well known to most of those involved in the Sugar industry for his considerable, constructive,  and much valued contribution to the industry.

jubilee year award

Do not forget that whilst we have such an exciting prize this year in the Jubilee Year award which enables our winner to attend the ISSCT Congress in Brisbane, Australia in 2001, selection of papers still takes place for the awarding of the traditional Kynoch, Talbot-Crosbie, Cecil Renaud awards.

FACTORY & AGRICULTURE INNOVATION AWARDS

SASEX has taken up the lead from SMRI and a further award has been created for the most innovative idea/invention as identified by a panel within SASEX.  This award is intended to encompass both the laboratory and agricultural innovations. Please submit names and details to your local Extension Officer or Roger Bailey at SASEX.

Do not forget to bring to the attention of Brian Purchase of SMRI any innovative ideas/items which you may feel should be noted and put forward for the SMRI’s 50th Anniversary Innovation Award Trophy. The innovation can be a small one initiated by a factory operator, artisan or analyst.

Where practical, a video clip of the best innovations will be presented at the congress.

This is a wonderful opportunity for those of you who have probably frequently seen or been aware of innovative ideas that have, up till now, not been formally given sufficient recognition.  It is hoped that the awards will encourage staff to put on their thinking caps whilst carrying out their every day tasks and will bring about even greater efficiency in the industry generally.

APPEAL FOR SPONSORSHIP

We hope that members will be able to assist with raising sponsorship for the 2000 Congress, if not directly, perhaps by way of informing us as to likely avenues to follow regarding this aspect.  As you know SASTA is a non-profit organisation which has been created to assist all involved in every aspect of the Sugar industry by providing a platform for the spread of knowledge of a technical nature.  Accordingly we rely heavily on obtaining sponsorship for events such as the congress and workshops which allow us to provide our members with the very latest information in the various fields.

Please note that the July edition of the SA Sugar Journal is dedicated specifically to the SASTA Congress and those who provide sponsorship are entitled to free advertising.

Please find attached relevant documents and a sponsorship form.

CONGRESS VENUES

REMINDER FOR SUBMISSIONS

~M  FINAL DEADLINE ! ! ! M~

1 JUNE – submission of;

Poster summaries of up to 1200 words

Completed short communications

SHORT COMMUNICATIONS

The option of short communications is to be emphasised.  These involve a ten-minute presentation and are to cater for exposure of new ideas or preliminary progress, which cannot justify a full paper.  They can also be used where the author is intending to publish work in an international journal but would also like to make available to SASTA congress delegates information regarding some of the results and findings.

POSTERS

Dedicated Poster Sessions have been programmed and a special effort has been made to cater for poster papers.  The continual prominent exposure makes them particularly suitable for presenting certain types of information e.g. newly developed instruments.

WORKSHOPS

SASTA WORKSHOPS:

Tim Murray, President of SASTA, is to host the workshops.  Booking is still open and the registration fee is R150 per workshop.

12th June 2000  Raw Sugar Quality

13th June 2000  Farming for RV

Venue:  ‘Kwa-Shukela’ House  (SA Sugar Industry’s new building) at 170 Flanders Drive, Mount Edgecombe

         SASTA’S GENERAL  NOTICE BOARD

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Annual General Meeting:

This will be held on 1 August 2000, Opening Day of Congress 2000.  Please note that nominations and voting for Council appointments will take place close to the 1 August AGM.

Workshops:

12th June – Raw Sugar Quality

13th June – Farming for RV

SASTA Congress 2000:

The Holiday Inn (Elangeni) and the University of Natal’s Science Lecture Theatres Complex have been booked for Congress 2000 from 1 – 4 August 2000.

Social Events:

An end of year members' social get together is on the calendar.

ACCOUNTS

Members are asked please to bear with us  re the sending out of updated statements. The new system of computerised accounting and its documentation reminded several of our members that they had not paid their 1999 subs and we have accordingly received payments for arrears for 1999 and subs and orders for 1999 and 2000.  The latter have precipitated the necessity to analyse each and every payment made and have more than doubled the time required in data capture and administration.  As soon as the statements have been updated in respect of payments received up to the new financial year end, 31 March 2000, they will be forwarded to you reflecting same.

GENERAL

Do not forget that we will be making the awards for congress on the Opening Day.
