Bell Equipment, Richards Bay
If big machines and a home-grown success story are your thing, you’d have been sorry to miss the SASTA field visit to Bell Equipment, in Richards Bay, on 19 May 2025. SASTA visitors were greeted with tea and coffee, and an introduction to the Bell story by employees Emile van Wyk and Raj Singh. Local Zululand sugar farmer Irvine Bell established the company in 1954, and invented the legendary Bell three-wheeler in 1964 specifically for sugarcane loading. This was later adapted for other industries, and Bell has expanded hugely since its humble beginnings! Mining equipment, with dump trucks in particular, now make up the bulk of Bell’s production, and collaborations with other engineering and production companies have expanded their range of products.
Bell does not only have a national presence but has a distribution and service centre in Germany also. Their products and excellent service help them to live up to their motto of ‘Strong Reliable Machines, Strong Reliable Support’. Their roots, however, remain local, and their commitment to family values and development of local talent are strongly in evidence throughout their businesses. The majority of their staff are trained within the Bell training centre, and support of local material and service providers is a strong focus.
SASTA members were treated to a walk through the enormous factory floor, and were entranced by the production process and the giant machines. The huge robotic drilling machine, taller than a man, automatically changing its own drill bits, looked like a behemoth from a sci-fi movie, and was a particular favourite amongst an impressive array of engineering equipment ranging from precision cutters to robotic welders! Walking through the production and assembly lines of dump trucks and three-wheeled loaders was an eye-opener as the machines ‘came to life’. A tasty lunch and time for a few last questions rounded off an educational, feelgood day.
